Distinguished scholar from Engineering School at Japan’s premier institution the University of Tokyo, Prof. Noriaki Kano obtained his Doctorate in Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Kaoru Ishikawa. He has been Professor, Department of Industrial Management & Engineering at the Tokyo University of Science (TUS) from 1982 until his retirement in 2006. He was the Dean of the Faculty II of Engineering at TUS during 1998-2000. Since retirement Eminent Sensei Noriaki Kano is the Professor Emeritus at TUS.
Accomplished educationist Prof. Kano made exceptional contribution to the industrial development of Japan since 1970 by training and guiding people from scores of industries in improving quality and reducing waste through effective utilisation of quality management concepts and techniques. In order to reach out to larger audience and influence others he published many books, videos and papers that have been widely prescribed as course curriculum in many business organisations around the world, benefiting large cross section of the society.
Prof. Kano has been the lead spokesperson for Japan in many international forums for many years and in 1997 was awarded the Deming Prize for Individuals for his outstanding contribution to the dissemination of quality control. He subsequently became the Chairman of the prestigious Deming Application Prize Committee. He has been awarded Nikkei Quality Control Literature Prize 6 times during 1977 to 1997. Prof. Kano has also been recognised for his contribution at the international level by American Society for Quality with an award of E. L. Grant Medal in 2006 , Jack Lancaster Medal in 2002 and Deming Lecturer Award in 1997 by the American Statistical Association besides many others. His advice is also sought as Chair Professor, Chungyuan Christian University, Taiwan and Advisory Professor, Tongji University, Shanghai, China. He has been invited to nearly 50 countries for providing training and guidance in the field of quality management.
Brilliant scientist Prof. Kano has developed original methods and techniques like ‘Attractive Quality Creation’ that is widely known as Kano Model and extensively used around the world in most Business Schools, Business Organisations and Consulting Organisations. His other unique contribution is Task Achieving QC Story that is getting popular as an innovative approach for new developments and is likely to play an important role in the future growth of environment and ecological friendly technologies.
Eminent Prof. Kano’s advice is sought by many business organizations and has the unique distinction for a quality professional to be invited as a member of the Boards of Komatsu and as a corporate auditor of Seksui Chemicals.
Philanthropist Prof. Kano is in the forefront making personal financial contribution for quality promotion in various countries for the benefit of students and quality professionals. Passionate promoter Prof. Kano visits many countries at his own expense to promote quality.
Dynamic administrator Prof. Kano has been on the Board of many organisations like JUSE and AOTS, while being the President of the Japanese Society for Quality Control. Prof. Kano made unique contribution in the setting up of Asian Network for Quality (ANQ) in 2002 with the participation of various organisations of quality professionals from different regions of Asia. As the first Chairperson of ANQ he established the foundation and now as Honorary Chairperson he continues to guide the integration of Quality Movement in Asia.
For over ten years Prof. Kano has been visiting India as an examiner and as a guide to various companies to enhance their business performance and become competitive in the international markets through the application of quality management. Distinctive features of his approach are his focus on quality management concepts and role in overall business management including corporate management and highly effective guidance and empowerment of people to train and guide others. He spends only a fraction of the effort as compared to others and still delivers outstanding results. Many companies where he conducted diagnosis for Deming Application Prize have derived the benefit of his astute but simple observations and comments that made them review their business strategies. His advice is greatly sought after.
Dronacharya Award is given to recognise people who have made significant contribution to the Indian society through their work of teaching and counseling in the field of Quality Management with humility, dignity, respect for others and a sense of service.
